My participation in the reading marathon taking place at my local library this week is limited to evenings. It’s totally awesome that the library is open all night – fun to be there in a great silence interrupted by the strange sounds that old buildings make. Last night and into this morning there was always at least one other person there with me reading. In fact the sign up sheet for night shifts is full, so there actually should be someone in the library reading for the entire 103 hours!
I spent about 6 1/2 hours there, from 7:45 p.m. until 2:15 a.m. I read about 40 pages of Sodom and Gomorrah by Marcel Proust, and the entire 160 page second section of The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky for a total of 200 pages. Seems like hardly anything for that amount of time. I guess I was averaging less than 2 pages a minute – tough reading!! I’m really satisfied with what I accomplished though. ๐
It was great to focus on Sodom and Gomorrah for a chunk of time – I’ve been having trouble getting into it since my reading time has been so fragmented lately. Devoting some exclusive time to it allowed me to really dig in. While I’m not entranced by it, it’s definitely caught my interest again – I’ve actually laughed out loud a dozen times so far.
The second section of The Bros K was kind of a drag! But I made it through and will be discussing it tomorrow with everyone else involved in Bellezza’s group read.
Back to the library tonight for another reading stint! ๐
I am so jealous of you for this awesome library reading marathon, and just having the time to participate! I am getting super-cranky right now at my lack of proper reading-and-project-making time. >:-|
Glad to hear you’re getting back into Proust, as well!

I’ve been having a terrible time so far this month getting good reading time in, so the fact that I HAVE to go read at the library is saving me – especially in the boyfriend area! “Darlin’, I can’t hang out with you because I HAVE to go read at the library. I’m in charge of bringing the coffee!! Must dash.” ๐ Best wishes for squeezing some extra reading time into the second half of the month!

I thought Part 2 was more than kind of a drag. But! Part 3 is much better and Part 4 is awesome! Hang on, Sarah, you won’t be sorry. I hope. ๐

I’m off to read your response to p. 2 right now. Glad I can look forward to the rest! ๐
