Persephone Reading Weekend

persephoneHaving busted through the last bit of Sugar Street this morning, thus finishing The Cairo Trilogy by Naguib Mahfouz, I am free to jump into Persephone Reading Weekend, hosted by Verity and Claire. I’m still debating between reading Someone at a Distance by Dorothy Whipple, or Flush: A Biography by Virginia Woolf. Flush is considerably shorter, but I’m probably going to dive into the Whipple since I’ve been meaning to read it since I received it two Christmases ago during a holiday Persephone book swap. Guess I’d better get started. Happy grey reading this weekend!

Happy grey reading to you too, Sarah! I hope you enjoy the Whipple and thank you for joining us for Persephone Reading Weekend.

Someone said recently that this particular Whipple is a pretty fast read for its length, and I’m finding this to be true. I’m liking it. Thank YOU for hosting!

I read Flush which I enjoyed a lot but got the Whipple as well. I only read good things about it. In both cases, you can’t go wrong.

I just might be able to squeeze both books in – at the very least I will read Flush soon. It too has been sitting unread on my shelf for over a year, and that situation should be remedied!

That same Whipple is up next for me too. Still finishing the charming Mariana. Happy grey reading!

Can’t wait for your review of Mariana, and it will be good to compare notes on the Whipple. I’m finding it excellent, but somewhat frustrating…

I thought Flush was quite wonderful. Unexpectedly so, as I’m actually more of a ::whispers:: “cat person” (if such horrid choices must be made, though I’d rather not).

Haha, I will readily admit to adoring my own cats, although I generally like most dogs well enough too. I’m looking forward to Flush, when I get to it – mostly because the idea that Woolf wrote it still catches me off guard…!

Both such great choices. I wondered if Flush might be a twee, but no it’s just charming!

I’m eager to read it, having heard more and more lovely things about it!

I reviewed Someone at a Distance on Friday, and I just finished Flush yesterday! I really enjoyed both books, though they’re very different. If you have not read any Whipple before you are in for a treat — and you may become addicted. After I read The Priory last year I ended up getting three more of her books, though I’m trying to spread them out — I don’t want to finish them too soon.

A treat indeed – I finished it very, very early this morning, having not been able to put it down! I’ll head over to read your review in a bit – funny that our weekend reading is so similar. ๐Ÿ™‚

And – for post Persephone maybe – how did you find Sugar Street? We’ve got the trilogy in the house but I’ve not yet felt in the mood to make a start…

I’ve been reading the trilogy with a few other people over the last couple of months – my post on Sugar Street will go up tomorrow I believe, and I have written about the other two books recently. Overall I like the trilogy, although it is a bit difficult stylistically, and the characters remain hard to identify with. And there is much dramaz. ๐Ÿ™‚
